What does the future of web design look like
Exploding Topics estimates that about 123 websites go on the air every day worldwide. That’s 5 and a half million per month. For the Netherlands, the estimate is between a few hundred and a thousand websites per month. That’s quite a lot and so the competition is fierce. A good way to stand head and shoulders above the rest is to make sure your website is future-proof and moves with the times. That’s why I did a personal deep dive into the future of web design and what websites may look like in 2030. Take advantage of it and stay ahead of the competition.
Personalization of content
Let’s start with “the elephant in the room”; AI. Websites will change tremendously with the advent of AI. Not just the method of development, but especially the experience on the website. Because AI is a prediction machine that can properly assess what kind of content you find interesting. With that thought, you can keep visitors on your website longer ánd get them to convert faster, according to
Conversational design
Automated chatbots have been around for a while and are getting a lot better with the great development of LLMs. Conversational design is about designing and improving interaction between humans and machines. As an extension of this, you see deeper integration between chatbots and websites, including on our own homepage. In the coming years, the interaction and how we do this will improve and the integration will become more and more complete. Also, 61% of B2B buyers prefer not to interact with a sales person, according to Gartner. A chatbot combined with a way to provide – in consultation – a price indication would be a good outcome for many visitors to your website. It will even increase the chances of conversion, is the thought.
More personal
With the advent of AI, we are also seeing a greater desire for “real people. One trend that we ourselves have noticed through all the customer contacts is the desire for more personal branding on the website. This means posting more videos and photos on your website that show real colleagues. Our estimation is that in the coming years we will see an increase in personal photo and especially video content on websites. In the end, human contact is the most important thing and the amount of generic AI-generated content will create a backlash, says Mark Cuban.
Accessibility
For some time there have been international guidelines for making your website more accessible through WCAG. This is constantly being expanded and with the advent of new technologies such as VUI (I will come back to this in a moment), accessibility is getting even better. Nowadays there are already very good accessibility testers and tools on the market. These tools will become even more comprehensive and better. A good trend that also translates itself into design principles. Because an accessible website must also be beautiful and well designed for conversion. With the design trends of 2025, that comes together better.
Green hosting
Attention to climate in web design and development feels a bit strange, but there is attention to this too these days. Especially green hosting is a topic of conversation. Everything we see online has to be stored somewhere and that’s what hosting (or the cloud) does. All those hosting locations have to keep running as well as be cooled and that takes power, a lot of power. Many customers ask, or even demand, that the hosting be green. Not a bad development as far as we are concerned.
There are also greener choices to be made in designing and building a Web site. Less code costs less server capacity and dark-mode designs (on OLED) cost a computer a little less power. It’s the little things, but if everyone takes them into account it makes a big difference.
Enhanced security and blockchain
With the advent of blockchain and AI, the security of websites and digital environment will get a lot better. For a one-pager website, this may not be very exciting, but for a complex platform where people are securely logging in and sharing personal data, it is very important. Blockchain is not new anymore, but developments will just continue in the coming years and implementation will continue.
VUI: Voice User Interface
With VUI, you leave your mouse and keyboard behind. We already see voice user interfaces in Google search, Alexa and the like. But it also has interesting applications for web design. This trend is really still in its infancy, but it hooks into accessibility and AI. Imagine having an Avatar that can interact with a user based on the information in your website and an LLM? It sounds far away, but we are testing it.
One important reason is that visitors like to do their own research on a Web site. They no longer want to download a brochure and thereby leave their data. Everyone knows what happens then. A solution to still speak to the visitor can be realized with these technologies.
